Paypal ipn : what happens if my server is down when the call is done?

What happens if my server is down when the ipn call from PayPal is done? Will the call be done again if I did not response the first time? How can I deal with this situation?

I need the ipn call to update my database. Without it, customers won't have what they pay for!

IPN enters a queue , tries again later, until contact is made.
I think retry time is exponential too . Not too sure.
