Today i received a few HD-DVD players that were shipped in retail packaging and left at my shop. On the back of one of them in crayon was written "I hate you rich f*#@@$" so it is basically unsellable.

Do i try and get a return from the distributor or should press the issue with Fedex that even though i could wipe the crayon off the box if someone looks at it they could see the gloss/impression of the writting.

I didn't pay for the shipping so i'm not sure if i have to go through the hassle of the distributor to get them to do an insurance claim or how something like this is handled.

When was the damage done? If you didn't pay Fedex then you don't have a contract with them in any case and so either way your claim is going to be with your distributor. Are these not signed-for packages?

Your distributor is at fault for two reasons:
  • They did not follow FedEx (or UPS) standards for packaging items with both inner- and outer-packaging.
  • They stupidly shipped devices with a street-value of several hundred dollars in "steal-me" packaging.

FedEx is not liable for outer packaging, only what's inside the package.

Save your time and hassle. Sell it on eBay, to a friend, etc.

Ex-display model; full warranty but no box.

Just sell it. If someone complains blame it on the delivery guy.
