We seem to be stuck in the Halloween mode

A radio station in town started playing Christmas music the morning of Nov 1st. Almost as annoying as the stores that have had Christmas decorations for sale since September.

I've been preparing one client for the season all year... started to see it pay off in September. Their business goes WAY up over the holidays, so I'm looking forward to comparing the numbers to last year's.

we sell unique gifts in a specialized art-craft industry

we are open primarily because of christmas, generating 70% of the years revenue from Nov 5th - dec 21st AND Every year in the days following Halloween, we all get incredibility anxious as there are no sales.

I guess we all should apply our nervous energy into optimization and clever marketing strategy, because doing a tiny little thing now could equate into an extra $1,000 a day in early December.

Don't make excuses...

i guess were still in halloween mode

well i got one...
my webmaster has a hangnail and the price of gas is just too high to warrent anyone shopping, as everyone is too poor to even own a computer anymore

I found that some competition, in nervousness, began undercutting us on prices mapped by a single artisan making a one-of-a kind unique gifts. thats bad, cant turn over the product; everyones just in a lull and IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR. Create a pattern from previous history and your current reach in forecasting how much to supply; a lot of gift items have a huge dip from august to early November.

BUT don't make excuses, those of us selling unessential gifts have everything to fight for, and hesitation and complacency will result in a lost battle. what you omit now, someone will beat you to, and win. Its intense, the best one makes it happen

great post. Especially for unique gift e-tailers.

Halloween Mode is a condition not an excuse that happens in our industry every year.
We could lower our prices and have promotions to push our goods, but what would be the point as we will sell everything that's not nailed down in a couple of weeks.

The purpose of my post was to get an accurate predection of the arrival of the intense Chirstmas selling season not to question the exsistence of Christmas.

In sports you keep your eye on the ball and know where and when it's going to hit before it hits and are prepared and in proper postion before it arrives.

But I do agree that we should all make sure everything is in place and ready.

Halloween Mode is a condition not an excuse that happens in our industry every year.

and imagine those stores that open for a month to sell costumes...

anyway, logically, if Halloween is in the middle of the week (and daylight savings is pushed back) then Halloween activities, and mindset hasn't moved, and the warm weather this past month everywhere problably doesn't help holiday shopping psychology. Not gonna get into the economy, as we all know xmas time is its own economy, but maybe people have to save now for xmas, and there is really no reason to buy just yet as an "emergency"... although unique gifts is urgent, as your favorite selection of a prouct line will be sold out before you could come back the next day to order.

HOWEVER ANYWAY i think as this Monday hits, Halloween week is over, weather is colder, it is darker and everyone now feels like "OMG x-mas is around the corner, it will start. of course orders now are no where close to what happens in early December.

What do you think, and exactly what "industry" are you in?

I think you hit the nail on the head, or should I say the pins on the head, Hellraiser1 ;-)
I would expect Monday to show a strong increase.
Looking back at our stats for the past 5 years, November 5h has been the day of changes.

Our main product that our company produces can be seen in my profile.
We have developed a few other companies to cover up the slack in our slow season that seem to do well all year long.
