Debit Card Discount with Protx

I am writing a custom ecommerce site for a client who wishes to offer a discount if payment is made using a debit card (as opposed to credit card). My problem is that I need to pass to Protx the transaction cost which is obviously prior to the debit/credit card details being entered. So how can I offer a debit card discount? Here are the emails

Q to Protx: "Can you advise whether your payment system can automatically give a discount for a debit card transaction as opposed to a credit card transaction as we would like to offer our customers a discount for debit card transactions?"

A from Protx: "This is something our system will allow. However this will be something your shopping cart will need to create before the data for the transaction is passed to us. As we cannot calculate the discount, the discount needs to be done by your shopping cart"

Q: "This doesn?t make sense to me. How does the cart know what type of card (debit or credit) the user is going to pay with?"

A: "This is something that will be set up by the shopping cart. Which will be sent to us, so you will need to contact the shopping cart you are going to be using directly and there will explain in detail how this is done."

Am I being thick?

Protx have confirmed that this is not possible. Does anyone know of a UK payment gateway that supports a discount for Debit card payments?

You could use ProTX to do this, however you would need to use their VSP:direct service, where you take the payment details on your site. You of course then have full control over the payment pages and will know what card type they have chosen to use.
