Can Google Checkout Buy Now Buttons be used for variable amounts?

I provide a service to clients, but the cost to each customer varies. I have set up a paypal button so that customers can pay whatever they owe. Can Google Checkout be used in the same way?
Can I show the price on the button as £0.00 and the customer can then adjust the price accordingly?

You can use a item/price select box but I didn't see any way to manually enter a price.

Yes, you can do that - but it means using the HTML API and you miss out on most of the power within the platform :(

That doesn't sound good. Can you explain further?
