How often do CC gateways change?

Hi,

I've seen some products that handle many MANY payment gateways and I was curious as to how often these CC gateways change? (in terms of format, say their form post or xml format etc).

Do these types of products require constant updates or these type of things rarely change.

It's been my experience (last 10 yrs or so) that if a gateway changes, it remains backwards compatible unless there is a major security flaw that forces the clients to stop using the method.

An example is Authorize.net's old method, I think it was called WebGet(?) It was replaced with the SIM and AIM methods (Simple and Advanced Integration.) They announced repeatedly that the old method should be discontinued and support would cease for it. I stumbled across a site a year after that using the old method and it was still functioning.
