I have 2 clients with very similar needs. They both require complete rebuilds of current site and to upgrade ecomm. to self-hosted shopping carts. Software must be perl based and open source. Many custome edits/additions will be made to meet each customer needs.

I have spent the whole day shopping around and the best I have found so far is ClosedShop. This is a Sourceforge project. I am looking for some input from anyone who has used this solution before and/or recommendations for other software packages available.

Have you tried OSCommerce? They are Open Source and customizable.

As stated the software needs to be perl based, not php, but thanks anyway.

I should also note:
Interchange - just too much for these simple needs
Commerce.cgi - I was not impressed though I welcome testimonials
Agoracart - tbd, not enough info yet
Merchant-Store - no longer OSI compliant
AllCommerce - outdated, current dated 2001
MerchantCGI - too limited, poorly written

all others I looked at, including all the freeware stuff, did not meet OSI requirements, poorly written, or were too limited

Sorry to be off topic. Could you let me know why they need to be perl based? PHP has largely supplanted perl for those kinds of use, and if this is a redevelopment I am just wondering why you're not going in the PHP direction to take advantage of the much larger advanced code-based available.

I think you will have a hard time finding what you are looking for then. Outside of ClosedShop, not sure if there is something out there for what you are looking to do. If you open to PHP, OSComerce should suit your needs.

I have been a perl programmer for over 10 years and my library is all perl. It is my language of choice and, just with any website, sticking to a niche instead of being everything under the sun has been my habit.

I don't want this to become another battle over which language is better, I see both as equal. Its a fact of when I got started, php was just not an option. Throught the years I stuck with what I was good at.

I can code in php, but my skills are just not yet as strong as with perl. I understand the shift towards php and the fact if the trend continues I must learn it to stay in business. I am slowly learning the language, though my time is very limited.

Try actinic catalogue
This is perl based and easy to use, a little pricy but pretty good as it has everthing you need including invoices

thanks for the replies.

I have chosen to use closedshop and do a complete re-write. It has the funtionality I need but the code is sloppy and not very efficient. Plus the html output is a few years old. I shudder at the thought of all those font tags on one of my pages. Funny, I can't remember the last time I wrote a font tag...
