I have recently added self promoting banners on my ecommerce site. The banners simply promote different products which are available on the site above the fold.

I found that the click through ratio was between 2% and 4%. This does increase marginally page views to visitors who are obviously interested in products I have to offer.

Current analytics statistics are:
42% bounce rate
4.3 pages / visit
2:30 average time on site.

Does anyone have other advice for keeping interested visitors browsing?

When designing do remember that a significant minority are still on dial up. Don't over load the pages.

Personally I am usually far more focussed when shopping on line. Impulse buys come from b&m shopping or catalogues.

Decreasing page views should be your goal, unless your business model is to bring people into your site with low cost products and upsell them to high price products.

However the upsell business model is a tough road. I have yet to see one client make a good buck on the loser cost leader theory.
