Forget existing/performing sites that you have or may take over. I am talking about new or poor performing sites that you take over (as a designer/coder/whatever is PC).
So you are approached to build a new site or take over an old, non-performing one. Designing and building aside, you also do ALL the necessary SEO work, sitemap submissions and so forth, to get the site up there in the rankings. It is this latter part I am addressing.
If it was not for your efforts in SEO, keywords, site submissions, etc., even if these type of things are included in your “design package,” have you now not become both a marketing and sales for the company? After all, what does a marketing person do – gets the customers to the store. And the salesperson sells the product. In turn, without your efforts, Widget Inc. would not have any “virtual” business.
So I pose two questions:
In addition to presenting yourself as a web designer/coder/whatever, it is not justified to say you are a marketer too? Is it also not justified to present to Widget Inc when they say “this is going to cost How Much!?” that you are also acting as a virtual salesperson. Just because the site is up does not mean your efforts have stopped – the effects of your work continue to be felt (hopefully positively) long after that final payment to you is made.
Food for thought.
