Exit Survey

What questions would you ask?

Short duration visits to my ecommerce site drive me nuts, especially if it's PPC. I wonder what they were looking for and why they left so quickly. What questions should I be asking them in an exit survey? Anyone tried this?

How exactly do you plan to do this?

I am afraid that anything that pops up a "survey" just screams SPAM at me, gets cancelled, and I probably won't go back to that site.

I was thinking about using an exit popup, survey type, which will help me determine what visitors were looking for and did not find when going to my home page. I am looking for ways to improve content of my ecomm site. Do you think they will associate this with spam?

Maybe not so much spam, but just annoying. If they come to your page and leave after a few seconds, how likely do you think there are going to be to that the time and fill out a survey? If they are sincere in the first place, most likely they will at least spend a bit of time on the site looking around.

I'm not suggesting you not do it, but I am cautioning against any expectation that a lot of people will actually do the survey.

I would probably never fill out an exit survey for an e-commerce site. And you'll have to make 100% sure it only pops for short visits or your regular shoppers will get annoyed to hell.

Thanks for the comments. I hate annoying popups too. It's tough to get inside their heads, though, and find out what these short visits are really looking for. I've tried looking at log files, but just can't fathom what I need to keep visitors more engaged.

What about doing a link like, "Didn't find what you're looking for? Help us improve," like some sites do?

No annoying popup that way.

Not everybody will click the link and complete the survey, but it will be less annoying to visitors. I, like others obviously, would not be returning to your site if you have an exit popup.

And, what about those that use popup blockers? They'll never see your survey.

Thanks, everyone.
I put up a "Didn't find what you're looking for?" contact form, asking for feedback on the site. I think it will be less obtrusive. I'll know in a month or so how this works.
