Practical Software for Online Political Donations & Contributions?

I've done a number of websites in which I used Paypal to set up online donation options. Now I have a client interested in accepting political contributions online, but they don't want to use Paypal. I tried looking at the source code of the donation pages for a few U.S. Presidential candidates, but I can't determine if they are using a particular e-commerce software or third-party merchant system to handle contributions.

Does anyone have any advice as to a practical means of setting up an online donation system other than Paypal or what software to use? I'm also open to stickies if TOS doesn't allow mention of specific merchant companies, but I'm sure some feedback is allowable.

Most merchant account providers support the political parties.

If the party is processing via their website, chances are they are using an electronic payment gateway to transmit the data to a platform. Most gateways will offer an API to process credit cards
