As some of you may know the US Postal Service is raising their rates again effective May 14th 2007.

The largest impact will be in the Flat Rate postage which is being raised 18.8% from $7.70 to $9.15. More information regarding other price increases can be found in their press release linked below.

from usps faq's:
What are some unique, new international services?
Customers will enjoy added convenience through the use of domestic shipping supplies including "flat-rate" options as well as increased visibility and more specific delivery times to major destinations. Additionally, online shippers will qualify for discounts of up to ten percent when paying postage online through usps.com and authorized postage vendors.

Customers using other international products will be able to use the same packaging they use for domestic shipping – therefore, all Express Mail packaging can be used for Express Mail International – including the flat-rate envelope; all Priority Mail packaging can be used for Priority Mail International – including the flat-rate envelope, the flat-rate boxes and all other Priority Mail packaging supplies and labels.

Looks like we can use priority mail boxes for shipping internationally. Sweet.

New pricing goes into affect tomorrow, looks like they lowered the flat rate charge from 9.15 to 8.95 which is positive news.

I've been reading the "fine print" regarding the May 14th USPS rate increase, and found some disturbing news. Starting now, Priority Mail packages that are greater than 1 cubic foot, travelling to Zones 5-8 (zones which use air transportation) can have dimensional weights applied.

Dimensional weight is based on cubic inches by measuring (in inches) and multiplying the length by the width by the height. If the result is greater than 1,728, divide it by 194 (the "dim factor"). The result is the dimensional weight.

Unlike UPS, which just adds the increased shipping to your weekly bill, the post office will return your packages for insufficient postage. This really sucks.

Actually this has been going on for some time now as we ship quite a few APO's. If the package is returned it is the fault of the teller as they have been required to measure the box to insure the postage is correct, if you do your own then this is when the return will take place and you are on your own...

Domestic Priority Flat Rate Box was previously $8.10 (not $7.70). It is $8.95 now.
