I refer only to legal solutions, like the ones offered by *a certain two letters and a number* company etc.

If so, is it in general possible to allow users the download of music files to usb sticks?
Or is a download only possible through dedicated software (itunes) or WMA files (and let windows handle the DRM)?

yep - it is my understanding that it a has to run through drm somehow. Going to a usb stick as a "two letters and a number" is going to get flagged..

Mmmh. So, how would someone download music using a public computer, i.e. a library pc? Or using any public computer? Any ideas about the process in such a non-private environment?

If it is copyrighted music, then you shouldn't be able to "download" it, except through a commercial legitimate service and methods such as iTunes or Microsoft.

Unless of course you have a license from the copyright owner, which you may well be able to obtain if you are looking at running a service to distribute the work of independent musicians.
