Buying Times/Patterns

I have some guesses as to buyer behaviour and timings, I was hoping others could pitch in and tell me if I am right/wrong.

During weekdays Monday - Friday I would guess most orders are done either early in the morning (before work), during lunchtime (while at work) and then mostly 7-11PM.

The remainder of the orders I guess would be spreadout over the weekend, with the bulk of them on Sundays.

Keeping in mind that since this is ecommerce, and people can be from potentially different time zones, purchase patterns might be slightly skewed depending on the demographics of the store.

What have you guys experienced?

Well it's sad, but we have indications many of our orders are placed at work. Not during lunch, during work hours.

We know this because we frequently have people in to the store and say "we want to buy item ABC123, I'd do it through your site but I can't because I'm at work." So instead of using company Internet resources use the phone resources, that's concientious.

We have peaks Thursday - Sunday, then again Monday mornings, drops off, picks up again Thursday-ish. Our guess is Mondays are rather depressing, so people buy themselves something to lift their spirits to get them past Hump day.

For one site where the typical customer is a small business/self-employed (although a significent number of home users as well). We sell strongly during working hours, tailing off in the evening, with maybe a couple of orders between midnight and 7am. Weekends are less than 50% of weekday sales.

Another site which is sells to consumers seems to get orders pretty much evenly from 8am - 11pm, with a few overnight. Weekends are stronger than the other site, but are still lower than weekdays.

Both sites sell entirely within 1 timezone.

Until the last 12 months or so, mondays working hours were 2/3 better than any other day. I believe that people would wait to get to work to shop with their broad band connections. It seems to be leveling out more now, an small increase in evening and weekend purchases. Maybe due to deeper broadband penatration.
