How many times have you gone to make a purchase only to find that the merchant "added" another item to your cart by default? It could have been software protection, a warranty, etc.
Does that annoy you?

Yes and usually and I will go over to another store. I know what I want and it is like taking my son to the store. I have to watch him to see what he will put into the cart but I should not have to watch the merchant

Adding items automatically is a great way to loose sales. A few years ago I worked on a site that did this...after we removed these automatic upsells, the monthly sales went up by about 40%.

Personally I don`t find it as annoying as receiving mail from a company even though you have explicitly stated not to be on their mailing list.

Ive never had this happen to me although if it did I would leave the site, I think its a real cheek.

don't like that at all. did business with an online printer and mysteriously each month £15 started coming off of our credit card each month. turns out we'd been signed up to some weird shopping program or something. they'd done a real good job at hiding the opt out though. you wouldn't see it unless you were looking for it.
how some people sleep at night is a mystery to me.

I imagine that many customers would leave out of confusion rather than annoyance.

We have special offers sometimes where we add bonus items in the cart, but the "add-on" is always free. Shipping is based on price, so no additional charge there either. I agree that trying to sneak in extra charges would tick me off, but do customers mind having things added if they're free?
