I just spent several hours per day for several weeks setting up a shopping cart that comes free with more expensive hosting programs. I've set up this cart several times on different sites. It's an old bear of a program and totally non-user friendly but it's free.

It works fine for smaller businesses but the current business has 6 main categories with 25 sub categories for each main category and about 4000 products total and we need visitors to be able to search within a category for the products within just that category.

Even after buying a special module that enabled this cart to supposedly search within categories and after spending multiple hours the last few weeks on trying to get this to work (it won't search within a category unless all the products are displayted on the page, i.e, you cannot do this search from the search page but only within a sub category with all the products displayed on the page. I can get the same results by using my browser to search within that page so it's totally useless.

I then was told it would not search within SUB categories from the main search page unless I list all 6 categories x25 sub categories, i.e., 150 categories/subcategories in one drop down box which is ridiculous. I was also told I need to buy yet ANOTHER module to be able to search within sub categories.

I and the owner of the site are ready to trash the whole cart and go ahead and pay for one that isn't so hard to set up and will do what we want.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm not a programmer but I do understand most of the commands in the cart software.

Hi Lorel,

Can you outline some of the more specific needs of your client? DO they have an interest in an integrated system whereby the back end fulfillment piece communicates / updates the ecommerce piece and vice versa?

Are there any special needs in terms of the customers (wholesale or pure B2C)?

Do you have any special shipping requirements?

Thanks,
-Scott

Thanks for your input but we decided to trash the special search module as it will not search within sub categories unless as arranged as mentioned above.

We are instead going to get around this problem by linking all products, that are already listed on the website, to their listing in the cart. about 4000 products/links. groan!

Disable the cart's search engine and go get yourself a copy of FDSE and install it. Add the cron job and you'll have all the search capability you could ask for.
