Where do big fishes advertize?

My problem now -- where to advertize my web-shop? Is it on TV, newspapers, magazines? What is the most effective?

As I have notised, the following AD methods are locally used by big fishes of E-Buzz:
- Street posters (Expedia, EBay)
- Slideshow-AD in underground stations (Amazon)
- TV (Expedia, EBay)

What is your experiense?

Unless you are a big brand or have a big budget I find online advertising some of the best for web-shops. (Although niche offline advertising can be very effective too... magazines/etc.)

Have you tried Google Adwords or Overture Pay-per-click yet? These are two of the most popular online advertising methods... that and SEO can also be a fun game to play.
