Ecommerce: Search solution what to use?

We are currently developing an ecommerce site that will feature around 15,000 products. I have researched a number of search solutions for the product database and have not been happy with what I have found.

Either they are inexpensive web site "templates" (like the Marcole) that are stored on a remote server and dont allow us to retain our web site appearance while the customer is searching for a product. Or like the Google & Mercado can run upwards of $30-50k.

I would like to get some feeback on a decent, affordable search tool that will allow us to feature the relevant products within a window on our own web site. Any input that will help save me more endless hours of research and web demos would be really appreciated. Thanks.
