what does N mean in CVV? -

My card processor manual explains it as:

Authorizing entity has not attempted card verification or could not verify CVV due to a security device error.

But what is a security device error!?

it's the last digits (3 or 4) on the back of your card (where you signed the card)

This could mean that the gateway, the transaction processor, or the issuing bank does not have support for the CVV itself, therefore letting you know that there is no response on the card code

The error could be any link in the chain of verification between your cart and the verifier. If any of the handshakes and passing of information times out before you receive a definitive yes/no then it could result in an error.
