Effective 1 Jan, UPS is converting from OS1/OS2/OS3 (OS = Ovesize) to pure dimensional weight, which is calculated at WxLxH divided by 194.
Bottom line? If you ship larger, oversize packages that are relatively light, be prepared for dramatic rate increases from UPS.
Example:
A box 22 x 15 x 33 with a physical weight of 28 pounds used to ship as Oversize 1, which means you were billed at 30 pounds. (this is an exact example of one of my products)
Starting Jan 1, that exact same product will be billed at 60 lbs, or exactly twice the weight.
Thought immediately of switching to FedEx Ground. But apparently the two companies have been comparing notes. On Feb 1, FedEx Ground is going to start using the EXACT same formula.
Maybe I should get together with my competitors and start fixing prices.
Ouch.
