Question on offering temporary discounts

How do you handle customers who purchased a product last week when you start offering a discount on that product this week?

We tried offering discounts one time but got too many people asking about getting the discount if they had purchased previously. It's a community and they check our sites every day. Since then, we've stayed away from every changing our prices because of that.

I'm sure there's some standard response to this that makes everyone feel okay, I just can't come up with it myself.

We tell them tell them that at the time of the discount offer there was a surplus. We were able to purchase at discount, an happy to pass the saving on to our customers. Unfortunately, the discount price is no longer available.

Temporary discounts donot seem to work for me. I have a big data base of repeat users and customers and they look for stability...

So I offer a permanent 10% discount over a certain billable value...

Seems to work well.

Keep your offers seperate - only show the discount offer to one group of visitors (by cookie, for example) and its much more unlikely anyone will know.

We do AB tests of prices and take care not to reveal our experimental prices to older users. Then we test for a few weeks and go for the highest generating price.
