I am trying to reconfigure my avs protection to losen up control a tad bit. I think that I may be losing legitamate sales. With the majority of my sales being fairly low at 40-100usd, what kind of sttings should I use? B,E,G,R,S,U,N are all set as the default for me. I get a quite a bit of complaints lately.

Reject If...
Address information is not provided for AVS Check (B)
AVS Error (E)
Non US Card Issuing Bank (G)
Retry, system is unavailable (R)
AVS is not supported by card issuing bank (S)
Address information for cardholder is unavailable (U)

Reject If Street Address Matches AND
First 5 digits of Zip Code Match (Y)
First 5 digits of ZIP Code Do NOT Match (A)

Reject If Street Address Does Not Match AND
9 digits of Zip Code Match (W)
First 5 digits of Zip Code Match (Z)
First 5 digits of ZIP Code Do NOT Match (N)

Is the fraud detection suite expensive too? I wonder if there is an amount filter that is less restrictive on sales with lower dollar amounts.

Good news: Authorize.net lets you view the declined transaction. Many but not all of my customers try again and it gets approved. The decline reasons did change.

R, or try again was frequent.
Also zip and street didn't match. Or Zip did match but street didn't. I noticed that some of these customers used characters like # and - or omitted a space like 102hwy136.

I use LinkShield by LinkPoint. It is free right now and it has been great. Authorize.net was way too constrictive in what I needed. This way everything was controlled by me and not by the gateway.

What do the B,E,G,R,S,U,N exactly mean?

Most people do not know there 9-digit zip or might not enter, so I would suggest do not rely on that. It is up to you about using the street address and the 5-digit zip code though.

For non-US issuers, do you have a lot of customers not in the US? If so you would want to make sure you accept those.

After digging around I now know why so many Canadian customers where denied in the past. I sell ORM-D goods so shipping out of the USA for a reasonable charge was difficult. We ended up removing Canada due to 1) They either had to use paypal or send in a check to pay me amd 2) They rarely payed the taxes and they got bumped to me.

I ended up removing {Retry, system is unavailable (R)} because this led to a few lost ones.

Now I know where 9-10% of my sales have gone. This is exagerated because one guy either gets declined once and leaves, declined a few times and leaves, or tries again and goes through.

I also upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1 in authorize.net last night too.
