I'm looking to purchase a shopping cart for customizable products that can take in text, take company logo uploads, preview a customized item based upon text/file uploads, etc.

For example, if I'm selling widgets, I want customers to be able to place their name and logo on a widget, preview it online, make changes if applicable (like font size, style, etc.) and checkout. Is there such a beast?

I don't believe you'll find that capability in any off-the-shelf software. I'd suggest talking with the developers of one of the leading packages (paid for - the open source folks aren't likely to take it on) and see if there's a module or if they'd develop a module that they'd sell you if you buy their package. Make sure the rest of the cart functions as you want before you plunk down your cash though!

It sounds like you're describing Cafe Press to a tee. cafepress.com You can upload your things etc just as you speak of. They also have a affiliate program where you can send traffic to them and earn commission.

Ok, now if you want to build something custom such as this, it is not going to be cheap. I mean, if its done right, its not going to be cheap that is. Cafe Press has ALOT of development into their excellent tools to do this sort of thing. My company recently bid on a project exactly as you are describing for a customer, and it was in the 20k range to just really cover the basics. The uploading, managing the uploads for later ordering and customizations, imaging and overlays, etc, was going to be quite labor intensive.

I do not know of anything off the shelf. I think you should write out a detailed spec sheet on the functionality you need, and have 3 or 4 solid companies with extensive imaging experience bid it out for you for a sanity check on the price. Also, get the different companies to bid it in a few languages they specialize in such as Coldfusion, ASP, PHP.
