i am setting up an e-commerce website. customers can pay by PayPal but they can also choose to pay by cheque or postal order.

i do not wish to allow a customer to log into the secure section of my website until i have verified that that they have paid. i have an idea how to tackle this could i get confirmation that this sounds ok? thanks.

1. customer fills a form containing a username and password.
2. when their payment has been accepted i send them an email with an activation link.
3. once they have activated i let them log into the secure section.

Ok, what if the cheque is lost in the post? With PayPal, you can use something called Instant Payment Notification, it's good, have a read about it!

I do not see why that would not work WeeBubba. If the check was lost etc then they would never get the link and they would probably call / email you

thanks to you both. it is good to get some reassurance from a third party. i am intending to offer the PayPal instant notification service. but i do also need to offer a way to pay by cheque or postal order as well.

Well get them to verify themselves by sending like 1p via PayPal! Nice and easy and everyone's got a spare penny!

If they send a check how are you going to know who it is by Name as they sign in by username suppose they don't use their name by order number?

I am kinda looking at this and saying suppose you have 100 sales 25 are mail in looks like I would get kinda lost at getting them the correct information unless there is something else in the sign up.

They will have to send you the user name with the order as you could get 2 Mike Smith sign up then what?

You could require the user name be referenced on the check or a form accompanying the check.
