I am constantly on the lookout for product sources that can offer reliable supplies at good prices. Occasionally I come across a deal on some goods that are based in China. I haven't bought anything yet. How do you tell if goods are the real thing, or counterfeit?

Buy directly from the manufacturer. LOL

Or look for a reseller listed on the manufacturer's web site (for those manufacturers that don't sell direct).

You can place a small sample order with the supplier to measure their time-to-ship ability and the goods they sell you. There is still potential that a supplier will change the goods on you once you place a large order. For example, just because a famous widget is "Made in Italy" does not necessarily mean it was manufactured by the owners of the brand. Chinese owned counterfeit factories have popped up in Italy to take advantage of "Made in Italy" tag, but are creating inferior knock-off widgets. More details here: [money.cnn.com...]

Alibabba is a good resource to find products made in China. One way to check out the companies there is to ask for references that you can check. If they won't give any, then beware. I attended a trade show in Hong Kong and another in Guangzhou. The best companies proudly display signs saying who has approved them. e.g., Disney, target, Wal-Mart, etc, and which QC programs they have passed. This is no guarantee, but it's a start. Also, you will fin d companies selling products you're very familiar with, so you know what you're getting. Hope this helps.
