I'm new to the idea of e-commerce so if someone could also explain the details a bit more, that would be great. As far as I've researched, every site has been a "sales pitch" and I was wondering if you guys had some down to earth advice. I think I need an SSL, a static IP (what's that for) and other things...
Thanks for the help,
Travis
The static IP is for the SSL certificate. Some webhosting companies offer a shared SSL that you can consider using but it is usually better to get your own.
You then need a merchant account with an electronic payment gateway (like Verisign's Payflow, LinkPoint, Authorizenet.com) or a third party system like Paypal / 2CO.

Adding another party into the mix can get confusing and you do lose some of your rights during that transaction. The company can be great for some - it really depends on your market and your type of website
