HTML email app?

This is a question on a subject that probably deserves its own forum now, but I couldn't see where else to place it.

Some website customers of mine want to start bulk emailing, which I haven't been involved with before, and have asked me if I can organise it. They only have small lists of a thousand or so existing customers at the moment.

I thought I'd start with a free app to get the feel of it, before wading in with the $$$. Some of these apps cost an arm and a leg. There seem to be several free and open-source apps, including Mailman, Groupmail (free version), and HTML Bulk Email. After trying the last two, Groupmail seems a good bet (though I've been advised to try Mailman), and it doesn't seem too hard to build the emails, add the images, edit the result, and fire them off - Groupmail even has its own built-in SMTP mailer, so they don't go out through your ISP (this is on the upgrade version).

These are all legit opt-in customers by the way, and an opt-out link will be included.

Has anyone any experience of free or cheap email apps?

If you are looking for a solution that you host yourself....we use eNewsletterPro. You can also set up accounts for different clients in the future if you want. Compared to hosted solutions and other apps it seems reasonably priced.
