Received a few suspicious orders in the last 48 hours, they all were placed with the CAPS LOCK on. When I look at the long of orders, the orders in CAPS stand out in the list. It got me to thinking..... the Nigerian scam letters are quite frequently in CAPS too.

There was a long list of "red flags" a while back. I can not remember if CAPS was a red flag.

Anyone else notice this trend?
Is there something about the culture that makes these people type with CAPS?

curious....

It seems like fraud attempts always have something weird sticking out like the caps you mentioned. Like the Nigerian letters who mention hundreds of millions of dollars when a lesser amount would look more legitimate. It's like they put it there in an attempt at fair play, like as if to say if you fell for it you deserve whats coming to you.

On the other hand, it could also be just because they are stupid...

Humm... interesting. We actually convert our shipping/billing info to all caps because it makes it a bit easier to read on our backend... however we do have very good fraud protection in place.

I used to use all caps because it's easier for me to see. Then i got flamed onasupportforum by 3 people whoclaimed ithurt their eyes. Maybe it's just someone who has poor vision & won't buy glasses, like me.

Sometimes it is also just because the person is (not to offend anyone) computer illiterate.

Like the person above, they just didn't know better and no one has told them that most computer literate people equate all caps as being the same as screaming.

I often find that using all caps is often a good predictor or age, thus being customers who shall we say have been late to embrace the computer.

Regardless of the reason, these orders do stand out and so they get additional attention.

It is nothing to do with vision but it is to do with all caps being much less readable than proper capitalised text because of the way the brain interprets shapes and converts them into words.

That is interesting. So you are suggesting they do it on purpose to baffle me into shipping the orders? Or is it just a hold over from nigerian scam letter.

Perhaps they wish to communicate urgency, or authority.

PLEASE NOTIFY ME IF ORDER SHIP EXPRESS ALREADY. EXTRA CHARGE OK.

All caps might also be the quickest way for fraudsters to fill out order forms since they may have multiple sites up at once. They race to place as many orders as they can before the stolen card gets reported or maxed out

There are probably languages that don't have upper and lower case. Heck, do we need both?

Along the same lines, I'm glad that USA schools are deemphasizing cursive writing which I haven't used since 6th grade.

---
Nigerians and many other foreigners really have trouble with commas and writing US monetary amounts, often putting $ after the number:

" I PAY YOU 50,00 $ "

" SEND TO ME IN N,Y,C "

The funny part is, we accepted the first order. When we forwarded the tracking number they got greedy and quickly placed two more orders. We have since contacted UPS and they have redirected the package (worth $400.00) back to us.

So if they did not get greedy, they would have ripped us off. HA!

You can count on them to be greedy. Same thing with checks in b/m stores. No one ever writes a bad check for $15 (well almost never)

--
BTW, $400 mdse would have never made it out our door but our average sale is much smaller than that.

Our average sale is about $200. So a $400 sale is normal.

YES. This is correct. Inconsistent and off looking text formatting is definitely a red flag. Also lack of spaces or extra spaces. This is not to say you would want to reject an order based on this but I would definitely suggest doing a manual review of it.

Example:

b2
John smith
123brook ave
cityname,ST,zip code
