what are some thoughts on optimizing for the search engines with x-cart? Is it possible to do this effectively with their software?

To tweak the basic install so that you do have control you have 3 options
1) buy one of the plugins (search the X-Cart forum for "SEO URLs" and you'll find them.
2) hire the X-Cart programmers to do the work that you want. Get familiar with the cart on your own first and be sure you are specific with what you're asking for. They're Russian and their English isn't that good so be sure to use complete sentences with proper grammer.
3) modify the code yourself.
Of the 3 I'd recommend going with the 1st option if you're on a tight timeline and budget. If you can splurge and are confident you can define what you want then option #2 will give you the best result - they built it after all so they know the code better than anyone else. Plus - it's a safe bet you'll have fewer issues when it comes time to upgrade (if you do this sort of thing).
one question -- do these "x-cart programmers" actually work for x-cart? or are they on their own...in other words, is their working email address russianprogrammer@x-cart.com?
i've had some bad experience here hiring programmers that are "experts" for certain software, instead of hiring the actual shopping cart software programmers (that work for the company that created the program)
