I am looking for reputable online payment companies such that I can process credit cards.

I can either get my own merchant account through the bank and then integrate Verisign or authorize.

But are there better ways?

Pitfalls to watch out for? Problems to look out for?

Advice and stories would be welcome.

What country are you in? If you are in the United States, First Data is the largest. Other partners / entities of First Data are Chase / Paymentech and Cardservice and First Data Merchant Services.

You will almost be certain to hear negative things about these companies because they are large and people tend to complain more than they will pay a compliment - especially when it comes to money.

Consider PayPal -- especially if you are just getting started. You don't need to sign an agreement with a bank and you can start accepting payments right away. Once your business has grown a bit you should look at other processing options as well.
