i currently use yahoo store and while i find it to be too pricey compared to what i see and hear others doing, i'm concerned about leaving them because i need their support -- or someone's support -- readily available. their solution is easy, reliable, and comes with support which is what i need.

i just need a better price.

any ideas?

oh, one more distinction: also need to have orders be exported in XML format, another nice feature Y! offers.

if anyone out there is a store provider for a living, i'd love to hear from them. it seems like what i'm looking for would be easy and relatively inexpensive, but i cant seem to find it doing a simple search on the web. maybe i'm searching wrong?

I have worked with a couple of hundred yahoo store owners over the last 2+ years and I have an alternative store solution.

That said, if you have low volume sales, the yahoo store platform is your best deal. It is when you start making more than 20k a month that it becomes less of a deal because of their revenue share.

Overall it is a good platform for the price.
It does has issues with reliabilty and performance, but any store solution at that price will.

For search engine reach it is one of the best platforms available once you have some minor template modifications performed.

One issue is that even though you can have these modifications done by third parties, the language used [rtml] is not mainstream and their is a limited amount of programmers that understand it.

Because of this the cost of template modification is about 40% higher than regular web programming because these programmers are in demand and often booked out for months at a time.

Modifications to stock template, generally produces around a 30% increase in traffic.

I do not do these mods, so I am not a vendor, but do have resources.

My solution is yahoo like, but it comes at a higher cost. Since you are looking for a lower cost, I would suggest that you optimize what you have and decrease your overall cost by increasing your returns [ orders ]

Well we seem to offer everything that you desired except the exporting to XML. I'll ask the programmer to see what that might entail. Otherwise - are you looking for an ASP / PHP solution?

You might check out oscommerce and their contributions. A quick search on their site shows they have an XML export contribution
