Online DIY store is still having problems filling its orders

By 1100 GMT on Tuesday, Screwfix had already stopped taking orders for the day.

We have one day a week were we only just cope, but what if every day suddenly became like this?

Saw a TV program about the history of Sears Roebuck. In the 1890s they'd get so swamped that they'd burn mail orders (CODs I guess) arriving in Chicago from the frontier.

So they got rid of plenty of staff, struggle greatly and now need to take on more staff. Bad management decisions have caused this problem.

Their profit margin is to low to support distribution. In theory this type of business model cannot work -- which seems to have been proven true in this case.

Too much too fast. My business parter (older and wiser, I'll say) has taught me a valuable lesson about growth. Manage it wisely and don't over extend or service, margins, employees, etc, etc go downhill.

Ever heard the joke about the 2 bulls standing on a hill looking at all the cows in the valley? The younger one asked the older one if he wanted to run down there and get them a cow. The older one said, nah, let's walk down and get them all! :)

Funnily enough I ordered some stuff from them last month for the first time. Stuff was out stock (but they didn't tell me), the delivery didn't turn up on the day it was supposed to and I didn't get any replies from my emails. Seems to make sense now.

Check out their homepage now - they've actually stopped taking orders for the day - have exceeded their 15,000 orders a day quota!

All I wanted was a deadlock for my garage ;)
