Sales Tax - Apply to billing or shipping address?

Hi - I live in Florida and have an order that has a Florida billing address, but an Ohio shipping address. Should I collect sales tax on this?

What if the situation was reversed and the billing address was out of state, but it was being shipped to Florida? Thanks!

I would apply it to the billing address. Your business transaction takes place with that location.

That is a question that you need to ask your state sales tax office since the answer will vary from state to state.

In California and most states it is where you ship the item to.

For information on exempt sales you may go to myflorida.com/dor just add the www in front of that. The dor stands for department of revenue.

It is usually the state where the item is being shipped to (what state is the item going to be used). But always check with your accountant, it is easier to refer the government to your accountant than it is a message board

Call your local FL state revenue office to find out for sure. I do business in Florida and have always understood that it goes by the shipping address, ie where the product is physically shipped to rather than the billing address.
