We are planning to get into the online software business.

We already have a shopping cart with worldpay account.

What's the next step

a) purchasing software resale rights of existing software

or

b) developing innovative software.

I guess it depends on how quickly you want to make money.

If you are just a reseller, you will not match the amount of money you could make if you sell your own (hopefully good!) software. But as a reseller, you will make your money quicker because the product is already developed. If you choose to write your own, it'll be that much longer until you can start reaping the benefits of a good product.

Why not to follow the both ways?

1) Purchase resale rights and start making money;
2) After that (or even earlier), slowly begin to develop your own. At the time you'll have your own software, you'll already have customers base.

Thus btw you can achieve better quality of your own software -- you will not be pressed too hard to issue 'raw', not-so-well tested programs, because you will earn re-selling other programs anyway.
