Recurring billing - alternatives to PayPal?

Hi, I need to take monthly membership fees from my customers and want an automated method of recurring billing. I've been told that PayPal can do this, but are there any recommended alternatives for recurring billing?

Authorize.net offers a recurring billing service. Not for free, of course... Don't know anything more about it, unfortunately.
