Hi...

I'm running an e-store selling: wood, copper and stone handicrafts, silks, crochets, paintings, books, silver sculpture, and souvenir stuffs.

Would anyone knows are these stuffs taxable when ship abroad, especially Europe and US? If they are taxable, what rates should I charge customer? Where can I get tax rates from all countries I ship to?

Any kind answer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Your products are liable to import taxes and also GST or VAT. However, most countries have an unofficial amount below which you will not be charged taxes. In the US, it seems to be very high, well over $100.

Whereas in Europe, it depends on the country, 25 Euros is used as a cutoff for many European countries. The problem is that your customer may not be charged what is declared but what the customs thinks the rate could be. Punitive duties may be imposed in some cases which could go to 100% of the product price.

Although you can get rates from several sources, it is extremely complicated and we don't bother. For example if you sell watches to the US, there is a rate for the gold case, a rate for the movement, and a rate for the leather strap.

Your customers should be aware that they are liable for import and sales taxes.

Thanks so much for your answer. But it'd be greatly appreciated if you or anyone here point me out the great source of tax rates for some kinds of product in US and Europe countries.
