I'm not sure if the company you use really has much to do with it. Most provide AVS (Address Verification Service) and CCV (checking the 3 digit security code on the signature line) which are the primary tools available. Other than than most falls on you. Ship to only the billing address and develop a sense for what is not "normal" for your orders. For some (good for us) reason the fraudsters seem to always have odd orders. Usually very large quanties or demanding the fastest shipping possible etc. A lot will depend on what you sell as well. If it is not something with a high resale potential you probably won't get hit by many that aren't obvious scams like requests to buy and include electronics with their order.

As I just posted in another thread, I received a notice just the other day that authorize.net is offering some pretty advanced fraud detection and screening.

Haven't used it myself and don't plan to, but from what I read, it looks like it should go a long way toward knocking a lot of fraud out. The service isn't free though.

To tell you the truth I wouldn't even look into a fraud screening service...I think its way to expensive and there is far too much room for false-positives and false-negatives. Go with an Authorize.net or VeriSign for Gateway service and run AVS...then combine it with VbV and SecureCode. This will yield you the largest of amount of fraud protection available today while....reducing your operational overhead. Instead of having to scrutinize orders you can focus more on customer service and order execution...which will prevent the only charebacks which VbV and SecureCode can't protect (returns, unhappy with service, etc.). VbV and SecureCode eliminate fraudulent chargebacks, period...fraud scoring gives you an estimation on how fraudulent a transaction MAY be. You take your pick on which sevice you want. I assure you the estimatiing service is more expensive than the VbV and SecureCode anywhere you turn
