Hi All

Just thought I would inform/ remind all the people that undertake ecommerce in the UK and use Royal mail post to deliver their goods to watch the the program on Royal Mail this evening on Channel 4 at 9:00pm might enlighten a few of us of where our goods end up!

Twenty first-class letters were posted from a post box in east London at lunch time last Wednesday to addresses across Britain. Not one arrived the next day, as they should have. Seven were delivered on Friday, a day late, and two arrived yesterday (two days late). The remaining 11 were still missing.

[telegraph.co.uk...]

The telegraph makes an interesting read! Now hopefully Channel 4 will find out where they are.

Is it just me, or has the Royal Mail become a disaster? Our post arrived at 15:55 yesterday - it is just getting worse. The number of Post Office claim forms needed to be filled out is increasing every day.

And now they want to change the pricing structure to size of parcels. Don't get me wrong, but they said this will make them no more money. So, what is the point? Shouldn't they concentrate on something more useful - like actually getting the current post to be delivered on time?

An angry friend of mine works for the post office. He talks of staffing cutbacks but more post. At the end of the day somebody has to get out there and walk the streets.

Thanks for the note pff. I will try to remember to watch.

Agreed, the Royal Mail have gone downhill. My girlfriend didn't get her mail delivered until 6pm lastweek!

And to add to their woes ... UPS have started an advertising campaign that will surely hurt Royal Mail's corporate business.

I caught the first 45 minutes tonight, actually it's still on but I've seen enough. Interestingly there are UPS adverts in the commercial breaks - maybe they got wind of the programme - what a nightmare, really is!

I sent 10 packages recorded delivery in march, 8 arrived, 2 are still missing....The royal mail postal service used to be the envy of the world, now it's the the envy of laurel and hardy.

I can't see why the Royal Mail should have so many problems - they don't have Kramer and Newman helping them out *_*

Just watched it, a bit of an eye opener, I've always wondered how so much stuff seems to go missing in the post. There were a couple of pretty obvious ways they could start to change it for the better........

It's not exactly surprising if you work in an industy that does nationwide mailshots - you'll have experienced most of the problems with non-delivery, late delivery, return of undeliverables etc first hand as you track the campaign responses.

It was interesting about the vetting procedures. If the Royal Mail agencies are not vetting staff correctly (which seems to be the main problem), why don't the Royal Mail dump them or change them? Is the problem that the Royal Mail pay them for each member of staff they get? (They would send anyone to get their bit of money)

If so many credit cards and cheque books are going missing due to dodgy staff, why don't credit card companies sue the Royal Mail? Or why don't they use a courier? Or maybe the customers should get together and sue the credit card companies and banks: they send us credit cards and cheque books and the majority can be used immediately. I have two credit cards, one I have to phone up and register before it can be used and the other can be used immediately. Surely that is lack of security on the card issuer?

The other interesting one was the UK Passport office dropping the Royal Mail. Along with Tesco (not mentioned in the programme), who now use ParcelNet.

Another point was the refusal of the staff to work until 2pm to sort out the 'strike' mail. That is just selfish 'militant' style working. I don't beleive that the staff should be allowed to be paid twice. I am glad that the double pay will be removed - everybody else gets paid once - and then the staff complain that they don't get paid enough.

I don't think the staff realise what it would be like if the monopoly were lifted: New companies would come in and take over. The Royal Mail would get less business and start to decrease staffing levels. Those who get removed (probably the problem causers first) will end up working for the other companies and will probably find themselves on National Minimum Wage.

Nice one. If a pay decrease is what they are aiming for; they might be doing the right thing!

I am pretty sure this is not standard of the whole RM. I too was surprised at the workers objection to working in a non Ghost overtime fashion.

The overiding message I got was that trouble was on all sides, from managers who did not care, innept vetting procedures and the odd dodgy individual postie.

>I am pretty sure this is not standard of the whole RM.

All I can say is this. My weekly mail from Florida arrives at the UK office within 6 days......never failed.

My mail from the east coast of Florida to the west coast of Florida typically takes 8 days and has failed on several occasions.

The Royal Mail may not be perfect, that is asking too much, but as world class standards go, it isn't as bad as some might make out.

I worked as a postie for 3 months. I also worked part time in a sorting office for excellent money on late shifts to pay for art college. And I never saw this sort of thing - ever. (6 years ago)

It may have changed alot in the time since I worked there but I have to state how desparately unfair that programme looked, the majority of RM staff will have taken great offence.

All of the postal workers in the office I worked in were proffessional honest people - and credit to them. Doing it for 3 months showed me how undervalued a position being a postie really is. It's bloody hard work at very unsocialble hours.

It's a shame that it has got this way - but I have to say that I am certain not all the offices in the UK operate in the fashion as some of central London offices do.

Rant over.

Oh, as a side note - the stereotype is true, dogs hate posties ;)

I am sure you are correct. Many are hard working individuals that are just trying to earn a living. But there is the minority that spoils the service for everyone. It is like the few Nigerian scammers that tarnish the entire Nigerian nation as being scammers.

Lately, I have been getting post almost every two to three days from the Royal Mail - Insurance cheques. Previously, I was getting just one or two a year. This just shows how much they are really losing.
