Wow! what a total runaround! We have a small business and need to accept credit cards. We bank at a credit union and I don't want to change. We called charge.com and got terrible customer service. I've heard it's best to go through a bank for the merchant account. What do you use and what do you recommend.

I take it that you are in the US? charge.com is a reseller for Cardservice. A lot of resellers are unfortunately that way. And charge.com is one of the biggest resellers for Cardservice actually.

What are you selling? Products / services? I do not recommend a bank because most actually do not understand e-commerce and a lot actually outsource internet to a third party.

Yes we are in the us, we sell restoration parts and materials. Thanks for your suggestions. We have paypal but find some buyers reluctant to use the internet so I need a moto, card not present system. I am checking out worldpay and paysystems right now. Which do you use? I will also check wells fargo.

I would not recommend worldpay only because you are in the US. Their rates are higher because of the risks involved.

Paysystems can offer a true merchant account in the US now - so make sure you know what you are getting there. They are usually a third part processor (like paypal) but the consumers who are paying you do not have to sign up. You are transferred over to their site I beleive for payment.

ok - paysystems wants 4% plus $1 per transaction - a bit high I think.
I'm filling out for Worldpay because they don't give any details before *sigh* but they want too much upfront information and I don't want to be swamped with sales calls and emails! So I'll just email them.
Any more information on who uses what service is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Worldpay is going to be about the same because of the risks there. Their speciality is merchants who are not based in the US.

Let me try to send you a sticky message about a few different ideas.

How much do you plan on processing on a monthly basis?

Well I got a callback from a couple friends who are using innovative merchant solutions with good luck. They've both had horror stories about other campanies that they didn't name so I'm going to go with innovative. I will post how it all turns out - thanks so much for your suggestions and time.

Good luck with it. We all have horror stories. But usually it is something with the consumer or we just missed something. The bigger the comany - the more people of course you will find with the stories.
