Are conditional auctions allowed on ebay?

If you wanted to sell something locally and on ebay.

Are you allowed to list things for sale on ebay that are conditional -- that is, it's for sale on ebay and will be sold only if it is not sold "in person" first (such as for a retailer that has a retail store which might sell the item between when it's listed on ebay and when the auction ends)?

TIA

No, that is not allowed. What you have listed on auction sites need to be held exclusively for that venue. In reality though, sellers "overbook" (to borrow a term from the travel industry), in hopes the added exposure will provide more sales with the minimal casualty of angry or disappointed customers.

It might be a reality to overbook, but in reality negative feedback can have a definite impact. I wouldn't do it because if buyers complain to eBay you'll be banned. I know buyers have been banned because they do the opposite as a buyer. They bid on several auctions for the same item and regardless of how many auctions they win they will only pay for the lowest price.

eBay sellers frequently list items that they're also selling in other venues. If the item sells elsewhere prior to the end of the auction, just cancel the auction. You'll annoy those bidders who were interested in your item, but otherwise there's no harm, no foul.

But once the auction is over, you better have the goods available for sale to the winning bidder or else you can get in all sorts of hot water.

Ebay specifically bans with very few questions asked on this sort of thing.
