probably been mentioned before but I just found out about the Mod10 or Luhn10 check.

All valid credit cards use this algorithm, where if you add up the numbers and divide by ten, there will never be a remainder. Pretty slick and easy fraud check for those of us not using authorization system.

Granted it's not fallible but possibly worth a look for some.

thanks for the info, but is this something that most merchants need to worry about? The reason I'm asking is because I would think that most fraudulent orders are placed using stolen cards. Are there really that many fraudsters out there just making up cc numbers?

Basically, I would like to incorporate this fraud check into my site, but would it really help?

Most shopping carts use the Luhn's method to verify the Mod 10 algorithm. You can easily create a spreadsheet to help you out - or download it here: [beachnet.com...]

we take credit cards to hold appointments and such...it's of great use to us - until we start doing real authorizations.

who knows...might not be useful in many situations, if not, it's your fun fact of the day. ;)
