Paypal Free Trial before recurring subscription

Many moons ago, I set up Paypal subscriptions through just regular purchases. Now I am playing with the added power of recurring subscriptions and things of that nature.

I'd like to create a 1 time period free trial package followed by a recurring fee. Setting this up is easy, but I'm wondering what exactly is this free trial doing. I only want to offer free trials to someone who has a valid Paypal account that is funded. Basically, the free trial would be a "reward" to the customer for taking the first step towards subscribing to my service. I could easily implement this by forcing the free trial to cost $0.01, but I'd rather not do this if possible. Does anyone know what req's there are for a free trial subscriber?

The PayPal user will need to have a credit card on file with PayPal which will be used to make the first charge following the free trial.
