Products with no pricing == Yea or Nay?

Does it make sense to put products on the web with no pricing? Is it really conceivable that this will help sell?

(I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would do this so I figured I better see if it's acceptable.)

An invitation to hit the back button imho. I have a couple of competitors that use the the old "priced to low to show" trick, and try and get the customer to call for pricing. I wish they all did this as I can't see it being in the least bit effective.

The only place that makes sense is if it is a product that has restictions on posting prices on the web. I know of a couple companies that are still holding to that policy.

If know one else has it priced then it makes sense and savy customers will call the site they feel most comfortable with.

Added .. Maybe Art, where customers know that prices can be the starting point.

several areas come to mind, art and collectibles - where often the prices are a guarded secret especially with rarities.

also markets where there is a shortage of sellers or where an "grey" product is being offered like a contract of some kind which would include negotiated variables ...

how many seo's have a website stating $500 you get this, or $1k you get this plus this etc etc. :) not many i think.
