Present home page based on search query

Does anyone use the referrer string to customize their homepage?

I am working on a redesign of my site. And I was trying to think of how to best divide up my homepage real estate. Unfortunately you can only cover so much effectively, and if you cram too much in it risks being cluttered and hard to take in at a glance. It seems like a good solution would be to make a certain area of the homepage dedicated to something that displays dynamically. That is, if someone searches for down comforters, you would display a synopsis of your best selling down comforter and a link to that section or that product.

Has anyone experimented with this technique? Did you find it to be productive? What kind of method do you use to strip the search terms from the query string?

We do this on most of our entry pages.

Depending on search query (q= / p=) we have several JSP tags that craft a featured item list. Also, we use Geo IP to show currency conversions on all items based on the customer's origin.
