I don't want to pay for certificates for my test systems, and I don't know if I have to set myself up as a CA to test this...
Any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have the ability or your hosting provider does, you can generate a self-signed cert. This way you can use it on your test environment without paying for a valid cert. You don't need to be a CA yourself. When using a self-signed cert because it is not a valid CA, it will prompt you with a Security Alert (if you have your browser settings set appropriately). You may want to check places like Verisign. I can't remember whether they have/had the ability to provide you with temporary certs. HTH.
