Two ecommerce sites for related parties?

I currently have business that's been online for about two years. My husband has a "related" business that could benefit from being online also. Actually, our customers may very well be interested in both our products.

I've been debating about putting together a site for him and having a link on my site to his. Is it okay to reciprocal link two websites in this way when the parties are related? Are there any search engine penalties to consider?

Thanks.

I don't think it's any kind of penalties when you linking to him, it's some rumors about if you're both on the same shared IP
He will benefit from your link if you have a high PR.
I think also if you have a newsletter ; you may add a little news about his site to drive more traffic from your past customers but you have to care about writing this part of the newsletter, it's shouldn't be like a direct ad. , May be some thing like news about cooperation between your sites.
