Image Browser in an Online Store

What kind of image browser do you like most in an online store?

I've got a web site and sell widgets. I have lots of widgets and lots of images for each one of them.

Some of the major stores like Amazon only use 1 image per product, but I have always thought the more images you have the more helpful you are to the customer so we put many photos for our widgets online.

What kind of "image browser" do you prefer when shopping? The thumbnail images already displayed on the product page or a link "click here for more images" where a popup window opens and people can see thumbnails and click for larger views?

Or the simple one that opens in a larger browser window and displays all the pictures available?

Or do you actually care about the images in an online store when you buy PC hardware and stuff? (that’s not what I am selling but just an example of what people might buy online). I guess for books and DVD’s it might not make sense to have lots of pictures, but for PC hardware for example it would make sense to show the people in detail what they are buying, especially to re-assure them it is the correct part and it will actually fit into their system (standards and description texts with lots of details can be confusing, while pictures tell it all).

Any thoughts are welcome! I'd like to design the perfect and most simple image browser ;-)

I would try the simplest one first- open up in a smaller window. If you have different images, display the best one first with thumbnails on the side or bottom.

Test on 3 people to see if it works with your merchandise, and if they have no major problems, it's ready to ship! :)
