Ecom Sites - highly sensitive to browser compat issues

Just walked through picking out $500+ worth of computer goodies earlier today. I went through the whole shopping cart - investigating products and etc. Took about an hour to look and decide. I get down to the nitty gritty and press submit on the page just before "enter your credit card" and the site dies with some form of browser<->site error. To top it off, the email to support just bounced.

I bet they wonder why they have a built in "abandoned cart" percentage that is so high. I can garantee I'll not be persuing any more business with them.

I couldn't agree more. It's for this reason I only use server side stuff for an ecomm site's functionality, and try and stay away from CSS / JS for anything other than cosmetics.

I think it was something proprietary in their SSL setup. I've run into that on an occasion or two before. It has to do with expired certificates and how the browser responds to it.

People where I work and people I hang out with look at me strange when I rattle on about browser compat. thoughts. Some co workers take me aside to "look over" there new site. One thing I always hit on is this issue. Most shrug and say but it looks great in I.E. and that they put a link up to download I.E., what's the problem?

One e-comm site won't even load in Netscape 4.X he states to "look at his log files as Netscape just isn't even on the radar". I just smile and ask how could it be when the page comes up blank?
