The new EU law regarding cookies is in force today (Dec 11, 2003). All sites using cookies must inform the user that cookies are being used and allow the user to refuse or delete the cookies on their machine. How many of us are complying?

I am.

Have done so since the sites started.

I've never had any reason hide what my sites do from the users.

If they refuse cookies, of course, they get a lesser service, but that's spelt out in the messages. They have a choice, and I'll respect it.

this is just more over regulation by the EU.

From what I have read, only 4 countries, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Italy, have actually passed legislation for this cookie law. So the law only applies to merchants who live in those countries. Also, the law doesn't apply to merchants outside the EU.

From what I have read

Got anything more concrete? This is serious business if you're working with serious business (i.e. advising a large client), and what I understood was 'comply', no strings attached.

Well, like I said, I have read several articles on this subject and I believe I am reasonably well informed. If you doubt the information I have provided, then by all means, please research the topic yourself so you can be sure of the information.

The Cookie Law that everyone speaks about is an EU directive. EU directives are NOT law. They must be followed by national legislation by EU member countries in order to be valid. As I stated, only four countries have passed national legislation. Therefore, the Cookie Law is only in effect in those countries. At some point, the other EU countries will probably pass their own legislation and then the merchants in those coutries will have to comply with the law. However, all businesses outside the EU are not affected and do not have to comply with the law.

Australia has made spamming illegal, wonder what difference that makes?, it can only work if the whole world bans it I rekon.

That allaboutcookies site has some good and useful info on it, but what an atrocity of design - I had to keep looking away from my screen every couple of minutes so as not to get a headache!

I'm not sure if it's the typeface, but the whole site just looks blurred to me.

Or maybe it's my eyesight?! (No rude remarks please....)

The law has big implications for anyone using a third party client side tracking system. Most web owners don't even know they are using cookies!

Frankly, I don't see anything wrong with it.

You might want to get that checked with the eye doctor, bud. Maybe frequently posting on WebmasterWorld causes blindness :P

Aside from that, I like how sites using cookies are now required to tell you what they track, and what they do with the information. Now it doesn't leave the end user in the dark as to what's being tracked and what's not.

Now they just need to do the same with sessions... :D
