european ecommerce patent insanity

Have you seen this? 20 patents to run a Danish "internet video shop"
[e-xamit.ie...]

Check out the summary:
"None of the patents are valid in India: By moving the video shop to India you can avoid paying for the patents".
Interesting solution.

I can just imagine some of the small business owners I work with in the USA having to worry about all that, total insanity... then again it would be good consulting insurance to know that people would really need your knowledge in order to avoid being sued out of existance...

I'm not sure how valid that site is. In the US, one of the requirements of a patent is that it can't be something obvious. Most of those patents are things that are pretty obvious or were already in use. For example, a basket is something in the physical world and that concept was merely transferred to the web, so I'm not sure if it would be patentable in the US.

The only thing that I have seen is the 1-Click patent when Amazon sued BArnes & Noble, but I think they settled before a judge ruled if the patent was valid.
